Auburn vs. Missouri

Auburn, Ala.
Auburn Arena

Auburn Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy

On today's game...

"As most of you all saw, it was definitely a better second half than the first half. I think a lot of times when you are playing a team like Missouri, they do start hitting the three and then you start remembering things that you shouldn't remember, like our game at Missouri. I think at halftime, we regrouped ourselves and played very good defense."

On going on an 18-0 in the second half...

"We needed it to decrease the deficit. We always want our defense to create our offense. I went into the locker room and the first thing I told my young ladies was `Do you believe me when I say defense wins games for us?' That is really what brought us back. Pressuring them a little bit more made them more hesitant and got them a little tired. It is harder to shoot the three when you are tired and have people running at you."

On Chadarryl Clay's performance...

"I thought she played a little bit more under control than what she usually did. She didn't have to play as many minutes at the point guard position. She got to play some at the two-guard position, which is what she wants to do, because she wants to shoot the ball."

On what they changed defensively in the second half...

"We just went to full court press defense and tried to pressure them as much as we could, so it gave us less time to defend in the half court."

On holding Missouri to four baskets in the second half...

"That is awesome. We will take it since they made a lot more in first half. We changed our press. We went to the 1-2-1-1 press versus our normal 1-2-2 half-court. If you saw, we put Cabriana (Capers) on the ball. Sometimes Hasina (Muhammad) or Tyrese (Tanner) was on the ball. They did a really good job of doing what we needed them to do in the second half, because sometimes they were playing out of position."

Missouri Head Coach Robin Pingeton

On the second half...

"I think they just turned up the heat there in the second half. I thought they played extremely physical. We didn't match that physicality."

Blanche Alverson, Senior, G/F

On the 18-0 run in the second half, difference between the first and second half...

"I think when we picked up our defensive pressure, I think that fueled our offense. I think that's where we've been successful. We've noticed throughout this year, before conference play, that's what we fueled on. When we upped the pressure a little bit, I think it just clicked in our mentality to switch over and be aggressive on the offensive end as well."

On how big it was to get this win today after losing eight games early in conference play...

"I think that we just needed that one win against Alabama. We've just been clawing for a win, and we'd have some close games and games we should've won but we let slip away. Once we remembered what it felt like again, I think that kind of helped us and we switched the flip in our heads."

Tyrese Tanner, Junior, G

On the job they did keeping Mizzou from scoring as many 3-pointers in the second half...

"We just talked about in halftime that we can't let them do what they did last time at Missouri, and that we just needed to up the pressure. We had to make sure we ran them off of the 3-point line, and we succeeded."

On how it helped to have Najat Ouardad back...

"Her speed and her quickness, you know we just have an opportunity to have another player play the point position and give Hasina Muhammad and Chadarryl Clay room to play the two-and three-guard spot."
