Auburn Head Coach Nell Fortner

Opening statement...
"We knocked some shots down, but we fell a little short. I thought this team fought hard, and we just fell a little short tonight."

On Vanderbilt making runs and Auburn fighting back in the second half...
"Again, I'm looking at the stat sheet. More field goals, more field goal attempts, more offensive rebounds, less turnovers. We did a lot of things right, but we lost at the free throw line. We couldn't get to the free throw line as much as they got, and I think that was a real problem. I thought that we deserved to get to the free throw line a lot more than we were able to get there."

On it being a physical game...
"Well it was an incredibly physical game for us not to get to the free throw line more than we did, yes."

On foul trouble hurting the team toward the end...
"Yeah that hurt us. When Chantel (Hilliard) went out there at the end, that hurt us, because she had come in and was really doing some nice things for us, hitting free throws, at least getting to that free throw line. That was a little bit of a blow to us, but we just fell a little short."

On what Morgan Jennings did well coming off the bench and scoring 11 points with seven rebounds...
"Penetrating. I thought she was getting into that zone, and she was finding her shot. Her shot was on tonight. I thought she was quick. She was just a little hard for them to handle, and it was good to see her take advantage of that."

On this being Vanderbilt's 19th-straight win over Auburn...
"I know. It's very frustrating. It is frustrating, but I don't sit around and think about it. It's just a ballgame that you want to win. That just happens to be something that's tagged along with it."

Auburn Player Quotes

Chantel Hilliard, Sr., F/C

>On not getting the win...
"We just didn't get to the free throw line as much as we needed to. I felt like our defensive execution was good, but there are always things that we can get better at. We will know at our next game we will need to penetrate more and get to the free throw line."

On whether or not playing in foul trouble bothered her...
"It didn't bother me. I kept on playing hard. I knew my team depended on me to do what I do. I didn't let up and I kept on being aggressive. I just kept on playing hard."

On getting better gradually...
"We got better as a team today. Individually we all got better. Our fight was just tremendous. All the games we have played all season, I have never seen us fight as hard as we did tonight. We really wanted that game. It is our last time playing Vanderbilt in the regular season, and we just wanted to get out there and give it our all."

Morgan Jennings, Sr., G

On not getting to the free throw line as much...
"We got the opportunities; we just should have knocked down a couple of more shots. That was pretty much the difference tonight. We had some pretty good looks to go ahead and win the game, but we just missed it."

On keeping Vanderbilt close in points...
"We have been consistent with showing fight all year, but we just need to put it all together and get the win. We have had a lot of tough losses this season, but we got better today."

On how tough this loss was...
"It was pretty tough, especially from my perspective being a senior. I will never get to play them again in the regular season."

Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb

On the game...
"I'm proud of, first of all, getting a stop to win the game. The intensity level that they had to get a stop and to defend 3-point shooters that I think are probably the best 3-pont percentage and they did it all night. Secondly, just having a confidence level that they have earned in practice and that they deserve to win tonight. I felt a different level of intensity, communication and determination to win tonight than I have all season on the road. Obviously it is our first conference win on the road, but I could just see that we were going to win by watching it."

On hand signals from the bench...
"We have a lot of different goals and Tash (Tasha Weddle) has been helping the kids with a lot of their mental things trying to get three stops in a row, so they are counting 1-2-3. We are trying to get them to focus of getting those stops and getting three groups of three stops in a four minute period, those kinds of things. That is what we have been talking about."

On what this win means to the team...
"Well it puts us over 500 in our conference and that is important, but it shows that we have more mental toughness than we had early on. We have never been a team that is really good early in the season. We try to be the best team we can be in March and just keep getting better every game and I felt like we were doing that, we're getting better each game and those two wins at home we built confidence and it gave us the ability against a very good team on the road."

Vanderbilt Player Quotes

Tiffany Clarke, F, Jr.

On keeping the lead...
"We definitely became more focused and picked up our intensity on defense. That was a big thing. We started to play personnel and know who's on the court and pick up our defense a lot."

On the win as a whole ...
"It's definitely a great win. It's the first SEC win on the road so it's definitely a great win. It's a confidence booster.

On the secret to winning road games ...
"I think we've learned that your focus and mentality are very important. Don't play laxs. Just come out focused and very determined."

Jasmine Lister, G, So.

On keeping the lead ...
"Every time they started to come on a run, we fought back, and we came on a run too. We attacked them, and we got clutch rebounds towards the end."

On the win as a whole...
"It gave us a lot of momentum for our next game on the road."
