Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Head coach Nell Fortner
"It was a great win for us. Any time you beat a rival school, it's exciting. It doesn't matter what the records are, it's always tough when it's Auburn versus Alabama. It was survival of the fittest tonight. It went down to the wire. They were still fouling us at the end trying to get the ball back. The ball game wasn't over until it was over."

On Marita Payne getting a lot of looks at the end of the first half...
"Alabama's defense really shifts with the ball. We worked on going against the grain. We told the guards to start looking for it. Marita (Payne) got in the gap and we delivered the ball to her." Head Coach Nell Fortner

On Alabama's late rally...
"It was a really close ball game at the end. I thought Alabama hit some really tough shots to make it a lot closer than I would have liked it, but I'm really proud of how we hung in there and got the win."

On scoring points in the paint...
"Without KeKe Carrier in the game it's tougher to score on the inside. Our guards did a great job of creating opportunities for our post players. Marita (Payne) did a great job of knocking some shots down. Without (Carrier) in the game it does limit us somewhat but Payne did a really nice job tonight."

On Whitney Boddie and Nitasha Brown combining for 14 assists...
"They (Boddie and Brown) did a great job of creating opportunities for their teammates. They were getting in the gaps and seeing a lot of good things so I was proud of the way they attacked the defense."

On DeWanna Bonner's free throw shooting...
"That's good, because Bonner hasn't been shooting the ball well from the free throw line and it was good to see her step up there and go 11-for-14."

On tonight's attendance...
"It was a great crowd tonight. I was very happy about the attendance. Let's get that same turnout again on Sunday."

Freshman Forward DeWanna Bonner
On the game...
"Both of us wanted it bad. We got a lot of points off their turnovers. They couldn't score off of ours so we took advantage."

On Marita Payne...
"She was remarkable tonight. I don't even have any words for it. She really wanted to win. She was very encouraging on the court. She was just dominating in the paint tonight."

On Alabama's attempted comeback...
"Whenever we're playing Alabama, of course they're never going to give up on Auburn. We shouldn't get comfortable with a lead, which we didn't do. We turned it back around and took control with some nice steals and defensive stops."

Senior Forward Marita Payne
On being one block shy of a triple-double...
"I didn't think I had nine blocks, so I'll take that. It would have been nice to get one more, but I really had no idea I was close."

On team's energy...
"Being on the court, I could feel the excitement. We had a lot of energy. We were having fun, and when we're having fun, we play better. Once we got on a roll, we started having fun and enjoying the game."

On confidence shooting from outside...
"After the shoot-around this afternoon, I worked on my shot a little. I wanted to refine that, and I was confident with my shot tonight.

Head Coach Stephany Smith
On the game...
"We played with a lot of heart tonight. They (Alabama players) fight for one another. They were fighting for their team and for the win. I am very proud of the way that they played tonight. You hate to lose, but the heart and the fight I saw makes it a whole lot easier. This is a fun rivalry no matter what."

On turnovers...
"We turned it over at very inopportunistic times. Closing out the first half was very painful. We lost it at the top of the key and (DeWanna) Bonner picked it up. She could have dunked it from where she was. We had no defensive balance."

On defense...
"Our defense just got caught. They were just going one behind the other in a line. Our zone is getting better, but we need to work on boxing out."

Junior Forward Lauren Hill
On game...
"We started off out of sync. What kept us in the game was the way we fought. Auburn was pounding on the inside; they are a tall team. It is important to keep fighting and going. It is all about how hard you can go."

On Marita Payne...
"(Marita) Payne is a solid player. She has a lot of finesse and knocks (shots) down consistently. We just picked up on it too late."

On previous Auburn game...
"This game is always a battle. There is a home court advantage. We had it up in Tuscaloosa and they had it here. It gets really rough out there, but it is always in good fun."
