Auburn Head Coach Nell Fortner
Opening statement... "That was a big win for us. It came at a time that we needed a win. I think South Carolina's just having a really good season. It came against a team that hopefully gets us back on the winning track."
On South Carolina's run to take the lead in the second half and how Auburn was able to regain the lead..."Really we went to a zone defense. I think (South Carolina) went 6-for-7 at that point in time, and we just couldn't stop their inside game, and we weren't keeping them off the boards. We just switched our defenses on them, and it kind of stopped the bleeding there for a little bit. Credit them, they took it at us, and I thought we worked hard trying to keep it out of there. The offensive rebounding killed us tonight."
On Tyrese Tanner's performance in the last several games... "She's been very valuable because she's versatile. She can play anywhere on the floor. We're really trying to get her on that block more. She's hard to guard on that block. I thought she did good, not only scoring down there, but she had two great passes out of a double team to (Najat Ouardad) and Camille (Glymph). We didn't knock those shots down, but the look was there, and it was really good recognition on her part. She has good poise, Tyrese does, and is really starting to feel her game really coming around now."
On Najat Ouardad's performance defensively... "It's huge. She's just pesky. Her steals, she just really changes the flow of an offense. When you're going against her, she can really make a difference in changing the flow of the opponent's offense. She just never quits. She never gives up on a play. She never gives up on a possession. She's just constantly staying with it. When everybody starts playing off of that on our team, it gives us a lot more energy."
On the win building confidence after losing three-straight conference games... "Winning always breeds confidence. We want to take it and get all we can out of it. It's been a tough part of the start of the SEC season, and wins are tough to come by. Hopefully it gives us a whole lot of confidence."
Najat Ouardad, Jr., G.
On how big the win was for the team... "It was a big win for us, because our confidence went back up, and now we just need to win the next one."
On overcoming South Carolina's second half push... "The first half we had the momentum, and the second half we had that drop down of momentum. We knew we couldn't let down our hard work on defense, so we just went back on defense and picked it up some."
On her high energy approach on defense... "I'm blessed, and I love to sacrifice hard work for my team. If I can get a steal from half court then my team doesn't have to work that hard in the paint. Any chance that I have to get a steal, I will just get it."
Tyrese Tanner, So., F
On stepping up to the free throw line with 8 seconds left... "I just told myself that I had to calm down. I thought back to the Mississippi State gam; I missed the two winning free throws. Hasina came up to me and told me to calm down, focus and knock them down."
On being the leader scorer for the past 5 games... "My teammates are doing really well on passing, us knocking shots down and me knocking shots down. When it comes down to it though, it's because of my teammates."
