Mies Set for USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships

ITA Tournament Central NEW YORK - Auburn junior Andreas Mies will represent the Tiger men's tennis team this weekend as he competes in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which run Thursday-Sunday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Thursday's first-round opponent for the 70th-ranked Mies will be Duke junior Henrique Cunha, the nation's No. 4-ranked player according to the ITA Preseason Rankings. Cunha is seeded fifth in the singles draw. The match is tentatively scheduled for a 3 p.m. (CT) start. Live stats will be available through ITATennis.com. Mies, a native of Niederkassel, Germany, earned entry into the event by winning the USTA/ITA Southern Regional singles championship, which was held at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center two weeks ago. He won six straight matches in the singles main draw, culminating with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Ole Miss' Jonas Lutjen in the championship final. Hosted by Columbia University, the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women. Heading the field are champions from USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College "Super Bowl," and the singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships was inaugurated in 1978 for the men and 1984 for the women. Past champions and finalists include current professionals John Isner (Georgia), James Blake (Harvard), Somdev Devvarman (Virginia), Irina Falconi (Georgia Tech), Lisa Raymond (Florida) and Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford). Big Ten legends and Grand Slam finalists Todd Martin (Northwestern) and MaliVai Washington (Michigan) are also among the past champions.
