Oct. 25, 2010
AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn junior Alex Stamchev's run at the ITA Southern Regional tournament ended Monday with a two-set loss to Tucker Vorster of Ole Miss in the tournament finals on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Stamchev, ranked No. 73 nationally, battled No. 58 Vorster in the first set, but fell 7-5. Vorster went on to take the second set by a score of 6-0.
"Alex (Stamchev) didn't play quite as well as he had been playing all tournament, but I'm still happy with his overall performance this week," head coach Eric Shore said. "He had plenty of chances in the first set, but couldn't convert. However, it was overall a good tournament for Auburn men's tennis."
Stamchev advanced to the finals after a solid performance on Sunday. He started the day with a quarterfinals match up against No. 31 Neal Skupski of LSU. The Pleven, Bulgaria, product earned a tough 7-6 win in the first set and followed with a 6-1 win in the second to take the match. Stamchev, ranked No. 73 nationally, concluded the day with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss in the semifinals to reach the singles tournament championship match.
The Tigers return to competition Friday as the team is set to travel to Las Vegas for the three-day UNLV Fall Invitational.
