AUBURN - The Auburn men's tennis team will play host to the USTA/ITA Men's Southern Regional Championships, which run Thursday-Monday, Oct. 20-24, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn.
A total of 13 teams and 82 individuals from the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi will be competing in singles and doubles during the five-day event. Matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day; a full schedule can be found at AuburnTigers.com.
Participating in the tournament along with the host Tigers will be Alabama, LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State, Nicholls State, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane, and UAB.
The tournament champion in both singles and doubles will earn an automatic berth to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., from Nov. 3-6.
Seven Auburn individuals will be playing in the tournament. Junior Michael Wardell will be the first Tiger to compete as he will play a first-round match against Tulane's Coby Kramer-Golinkoff at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The other six Tigers earned a first-round bye and will compete later in the day. Sophomore Rafael Rondino will play Mississippi State's James Chaudry at noon, and the rest of the Tigers will play opponents to be determined. Sophomore Dennis Lengsfeld plays at 1:30 p.m., junior Lucas Lopasso plays at 2:30 p.m., senior Alex Stamchev competes at 3 p.m, and sophomore Daniel Cochrane and junior Andreas Mies play at 4 p.m.
The Tigers will field three doubles teams, all of which earned first-round byes and will first compete Friday.
