URBANA, Ill. - For the first time in program history, Auburn will have quarterfinalists in both singles and doubles in the same season at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships after a pair of victories in the round of 16 Friday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Center.

Senior Andreas Mies (Niederkassel, Germany) is the last Southeastern Conference player standing in the singles draw as he advances to his first career quarterfinal, and the doubles team of Mies and junior Daniel Cochrane (Alton, England) will play in the doubles quarterfinal. Both matches will take place Saturday on the campus of the University of Illinois.

"What a day," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "We found a way to get it done. Andy was solid as a rock in singles today. He was ripping the ball. He's playing better and better as the tournament goes on. He's gaining confidence and hitting the ball really clean. But you've got to raise your level as you go on in this tournament. Then in doubles, we just found a way to win. That (Georgia State) team was tough. We just found a way to get it done. We were up 3-1 and 5-3 in the third set, got broken both times, and then broke back to win it."

Prior to this season, five Auburn players have advanced to the NCAA singles quarterfinals, with the most recent being Tim Puetz, a semifinalist in 2010. In doubles, four Tiger teams have made it to the final eight, with Puetz and Alexey Tsyrenov making the semifinals in 2009. But until this year, Auburn has never had a singles and doubles quarterfinalist in the same season.

Mies, ranked 19th in the nation, earned his way into the quarters with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 45th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann of Southern California. It was Mies' second win over Hanfmann this season; the two faced each other in Mies' first match of the season at the ITA All-American Championship in October. Mies took that decision in three sets.

"I think I played a very good match today," Mies said. "I had two tough matches in the first two rounds that went three sets, so it was good to save some energy for the next round. I'm really pleased with my match today. I really thought it was a big achievement to go to the Sweet 16, but to go to the quarterfinals feels even better. I hope I'm not finished yet and that I can go deep in the tournament."

Mies will take on 11th-ranked Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine in his quarterfinal match, set for a noon CT start Saturday.

In doubles, the sixth-ranked team of Cochrane and Mies fought back from an early deficit to outlast 60th-ranked Lucas Ana and Victor Valente of Georgia State, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. The doubles quarterfinal match will follow later Saturday afternoon as Mies and Cochrane will face the nation's No. 2 team, Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler of Duke. That match will not begin before 3 p.m.
