TULSA, Okla. - Auburn's Alexey Tsyrenov continues his 2008 season Wednesday as he enters the first round of the 2008 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Tournament. Tsyrenov will face Tennessee Tech's Borja Zarco in his first-round matchup.

"Alexey is doing pretty good, trying to adjust to the heat out here, but we will see," said head coach Eric Shore. Temperatures at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. have reached the 90s during the hottest part of the day.

After taking some time off since Auburn was knocked out of the NCAA Team Tournament on May 11, Shore says Tsyrenov is relaxed and ready to play.

"Alexey finished the season in a little bit of a lull," said Shore." He is a little bit rested now and ready to play. He definitely has a chance, just need a few breaks to go our way."

Tsyrenov, currently ranked 27th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, holds a 12-12 overall singles record and an 8-9 record against the ITA Top-125. His best win of the season game on March 8 as he defeated No. 8 Mattias Wellermann of Ole Miss, 6-4, 6-4. He followed that win up a week later with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over 13th-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State.

For his efforts during the regular season, and his 6-5 record against SEC competition, Tsyrenov was named to the All-SEC first team.

Tsyrenov is making his first appearance at the NCAA Singles Championships, but it marks the eighth time in the past nine years that Auburn has sent someone to the tournament.

Zarco, a native of Madrid, Spain, is the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year after tallying a 27-3 record and a No. 102 national ranking. He is the automatic qualifier from the OVC and is making his first appearance in the NCAA Singles Tournament.

All first round matches in the NCAA Singles Tournament begin on Wednesday, March 21. The match between Tsyrenov and Zarco is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the match between San Diego's Dean Jackson and No. 7 overall seed Lars Poerschke of Baylor.
