AUBURN, Ala. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association honored Auburn junior Tim Puetz by naming him ITA Southern Region Player to Watch, the association announced Thursday.
The ITA Player to Watch award goes to a player who has an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of his or her career.
Puetz is set to compete at the 2010 NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles completion. In singles play, Puetz is ranked No. 16 nationally and holds a 17-6 overall mark this spring with 13 of those wins coming against the ITA Top-125 and four over the Top-25. On Feb. 17, Puetz topped No. 4 Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 7-5) and, most recently, he defeated No. 5 Alex Lacroix of Florida in two sets (6-3, 6-4) on April 24.
Puetz finished with a 5-5 regular-season SEC record and recorded three-straight individual victories in the 2010 SEC Tournament. For his efforts, he was named to the All-SEC First Team.
In doubles competition, Puetz and partner Alex Stamchev stand at No. 10 in the country and are 15-6 overall with a 5-5 mark in SEC competition. The pair has been ranked as high as No. 1 nationally on Feb. 18.
This past fall, Puetz won the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southern Regional singles and doubles titles. He was selected to compete at the 2009 ITA Indoor Championships and ITA All-American Championships in both singles and doubles.
The No. 31 Auburn men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, May 15 with the first round of the 2010 NCAA Regional Tournament. The Tigers will face No. 51 Troy at 8 a.m. CT in Gainesville, Fla.
