AUBURN - The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected Auburn senior Tim Puetz into the field of 64 singles players and the Tigers' No. 1 duo of Puetz and freshman Daniel Cochrane into the field of 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, California, following the conclusion of the team championships.
"We expected it, and they earned it," Auburn head Coach Eric Shore said. "Tim Puetz has had a great senior year. This is good for Cochrane with it being his freshman year and I am proud of them."
Puetz, who is ranked 12th in singles as well as in doubles, has posted a 16-3 (7-2 SEC) record in the No. 1 spot for the 23rd-ranked Tigers. Puetz has also recorded nine victories over opponents ranked in the ITA Top 100.
The Usingen, Germany, native's trip to this year's NCAA Singles Tournament marks the 11th time in the past 12 years that Auburn has sent a player to compete in the national event.
In doubles, Puetz and Cochrane have posted a 13-7 (6-5 SEC) record in the No. 1 spot for the Tigers this season. Of those 13 wins, three have come against ranked opponents. The German and British combo has won seven out of their last 10 matches, including the last three.
Puetz will be making the third trip of his career to the NCAA Doubles Tournament. Last year, he paired with Alex Stamchev
, and in 2009 Puetz advanced to the semifinals with Alexey Tsyrenov
