INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Alexey Tsyrenov and sophomore Tim Puetz have been selected to compete in the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. Tsyrenov will take part in singles competition as well as in doubles playing alongside Puetz.
With singles and doubles competition being conducted May 20-25, the two will have little time to recover from the team championships (May 14-19).
Tsyrenov is among 48 at-large selections to participate in the singles championships, while there are also 16 automatic qualifiers. This year, the senior has posted an 18-15 mark and is 10-10 in dual action. Tsyrenov is currently ranked as the No. 38 singles player in the nation and has been ranked within the ITA top-75 all season.
Some of Tsyrenov's most notable wins this season include topping Georgia's then-No. 10 Nate Schnugg and his win over Florida's then-No. 28 Alex Lacroix, which started an Auburn comeback to top the No. 10 ranked Gators.
In doubles competition, Tsyrenov and Puetz, the 10th ranked pair in the country, will look to continue their success this season. They are one of the eight doubles teams from the SEC to compete in the field of 32. The duo has been ranked within the ITA top-15 all season and has defeated seven other ranked opponents. Overall, they are 25-7 and hold to a 14-4 dual action mark.
This season, Tsyrenov and Puetz have posted eight clinching victories to give the Tigers an early lead in matches. During the Blue/Gray Classic, the two defeated the now-No. 3 pair of John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren of Tennessee, 8-5.
The singles and doubles competition will take place at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, with Texas A&M University hosting.
