April 26, 2012
AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn senior Alex Stamchev and junior Andreas Mies were named First-Team All-SEC as the Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Awards were announced Thursday morning by the conference office. Stamchev finished the dual meet season with a 17-7 record at No. 2 singles, including a 6-4 mark in SEC matches. Including matches played during the fall season, he enters postseason play at 24-10 overall in singles. This season, he has rewritten the Auburn record books as he now owns the all-time school records for career doubles wins (106) and combined wins (209). He was also named SEC Player of the Week twice during the season, and he comes in at No. 72 in the latest ITA singles rankings. It marks the third All-SEC honor for Stamchev as he was named to the league's second team in 2010 and 2011. Mies, ranked 19th in the nation, was an automatic selection to the All-SEC team by virtue of his national ranking. He has put together a 14-6 mark in dual match play, playing all matches at the No. 1 singles position, and he leads the Tigers with a 26-9 record overall this season. He recorded a 6-5 mark in SEC play, and he earned 10 victories over nationally ranked opponents. In the fall, he captured the main draw championship at the USTA/ITA South Regional and earned a berth in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. As a doubles team, Stamchev and Mies have been among the nation's best in 2011-12. Ranked No. 9 in the nation, the Tiger team has compiled a 12-4 overall mark in doubles, including an 8-3 record in dual match play (5-3 in SEC competition). Six of their 12 wins have come against top-75 competition, including four over teams in the nation's top 25. The Tigers, ranked 15th in the latest ITA release, will learn their postseason destination next week as the NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1. 2012 SEC Men's Tennis Awards Coach of the Year: Dennis Emery, Kentucky Player of the Year: Eric Quigley, Kentucky Freshman of the Year: Nik Scholtz, Ole Miss Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Charlie Jones, Vanderbilt
