AUBURN, Ala. - Freshman Tim Hewitt picked up his first-ever SEC weekly honor, being named men's tennis Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
"Tim (Hewitt) works very hard and is very deserving of this honor," head coach Eric Shore said. "He continues to get better and more comfortable and it is showing in his results."
The London, England product tallied a pair of singles wins to improve his season record to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the SEC. Hewitt is now on a four-match win streak that includes three-straight SEC victories and is ranked No. 20 in the ITA Southern Regional Rankings.
Hewitt opened the weekend with a match-clinching victory on April 2 over Arkansas' Dmitry Lebedev at No. 2 singles. He picked up a 6-3 win in the first set, but Lebedev took set two by the same score. The pair battled throughout the final set and, tied at two apiece, Hewitt made a run to go up 4-2 and finished the match with a 6-3 victory.
"He clinched it for us in a gutsy performance," Shore said. "He continued to battle despite losing the second set and was fortunate enough to have a little more left at the end."
Hewitt closed out the weekend with a two-set (6-2, 7-6) victory over LSU's Mark Bowtell in the team's 5-2 win on April 4.
In doubles, Hewitt and teammate Lucas Lopasso secured the doubles point for Auburn against Arkansas, coming away with an 8-4 win over Gregoire Lehmann and Michael Ward. The pair, who usually plays at No. 3 doubles, moved up a spot against LSU and took on Bowtell and Stefan Szacinski of LSU at No. 2 doubles. They lost 8-2 to the visitors.
Auburn travels to the state of Mississippi for a pair of SEC matches next weekend. The Tigers take on Ole Miss at 2 p.m. in Oxford on April 9 and then head to Starkville for a 1 p.m. match against Mississippi State on April 11.
