AUBURN - The No. 36-ranked Auburn men's tennis team is set to take on its first Top-10 team of the season Tuesday as the Tigers travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a dual match against No. 8 North Carolina.
The Tigers (4-2) travel to UNC (7-3) after a 7-0 sweep over No. 55 South Florida on Friday. The win over the Bulls is the third sweep of the season for Auburn.
North Carolina has won its last three matches, all three coming against Top 25 opponents. Their latest win was against No. 21 Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1.
Auburn and UNC last met in 2003 as the Tar Heels handed the Tigers their first loss of the season in Chapel Hill, N.C., 5-1. North Carolina leads the all-time series 9-3, and Auburn is 2-7 under head coach Eric Shore.
The Tigers are looking to remain perfect in doubles play against North Carolina, but they will have to get through the No. 6-ranked duo of Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney. Carolina also boasts two nationally ranked singles players. Sophomore Kearney is ranked No. 66 and sophomore No.75 Stefan Hardy.
Auburn's undefeated duo of Tim Puetz and Lukas Marsoun is currently ranked No. 31. Also, ranked in doubles is the team of Terence Nugent and Alexey Tsyrenov as they coming into the match with a No. 43 ranking.
Puetz, who has defeated two ranked opponents in the last two matches, is looking to continue his dominance in singles and doubles play against the Tar Heels. The No. 81-ranked freshman is currently 6-0 in singles play in dual matches and has won four of those matches in straight sets.
Sophomore Tsyrenov is also ranked, coming in at No. 59 with a 5-1 record in singles play.
