AUBURN - The Auburn men's tennis team was well-represented in the Feb. 20 release of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings with the Tigers moving up to No. 36 along with four entries in the individual rankings.
Auburn has been in the team rankings every week so far this season, debuting at No. 28 in the preseason poll and dropping to as low as No. 39 last week. The Tigers move up three spots following their first victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 41 Georgia Tech, 5-2, and a close 4-3 loss to No. 23-ranked Tulsa.
In the individual rankings, two Auburn players found their way to the top 100 in singles. With a 3-1 dual singles record in Auburn's No. 1 spot, Alexey Tsyrenov is currently ranked No. 59 in the country. Not far behind him is freshman Tim Puetz, this week's SEC Freshman of the Week, with his No. 81 ranking after a 5-0 start to the season in dual matches.
The Tigers also have two doubles teams ranked in the top 50. The combo of Lukas Marsoun and Puetz (5-0 in dual matches) leads the way with a No. 31 ranking while the team of Tsyrenov and Terence Nugent (3-1) trails at No. 41.
The No. 36 Tigers return to action Friday with a match against 54th-ranked South Florida. Action is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarbrough Tennis Center.
