AUBURN, Ala. -- The No. 22 Auburn men's tennis team hosts No. 15 Georgia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 20th, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Admission is free.
"We lost to them last year, 4-3, at their place after we were up 3-1, and we didn't finish it," head coach Eric Shore said. "They had a great win on Saturday against Georgia, so they are coming off an emotional match. They will be very pumped up and so will we. It is going to be a really good match and a lot fun."
Sunday will be the 36th meeting between the Yellow Jackets and the Tigers, with Georgia Tech holding a 21-14 advantage. Last year, the Tigers were defeated by Georgia Tech, 4-3.
The Tigers (5-1) hosted UAB on Wednesday and came away with a solid 6-1 victory. The Tigers won the first doubles match of the afternoon as senior Tim Puetz and freshman Daniel Cochrane moved to 4-0 as a pair after they defeated Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser, 8-1. On court two, junior Alex Stamchev and sophomore Andreas Mies clinched the doubles point for Auburn after winning 8-3. Mies continued his stellar start to the season as he notched a win over Dan Cornei, 6-2, 6-0, for the first singles win of the match. On court number one, No. 72 Puetz put away Manlow, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Tigers an early 3-0 advantage. Clinching the win for Auburn was SEC Freshman of the Week Daniel Cochrane.
Previewing the Ramblin' Wreck
The 15th-ranked Yellow Jackets are currently 6-1 on the year and are on a three-match winning streak. In their last match, Georgia Tech defeated No. 11 Georgia, 4-3. The Yellow Jackets are led by senior Guillermo Gomez and sophomore Juan Spir. Gomez, who is ranked 14th nationally in singles, is currently 6-1 in the spring season. Gomez is ranked 35th and is also 6-1 on the season, and has won his last three matches.
Up Next for the Tigers
Auburn heads to Montgomery, Ala. to play in the Blue Gray Classic on Feb. 25th before hitting the road for a pair of SEC matches. Auburn will play Georgia on March 4th and Tennessee on March 6th.
