AUBURN - The 21st-ranked Auburn men's tennis team will face its toughest challenge of the season so far when they take on the 23rd-ranked Indiana Hoosiers to open the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at 10 a.m. Saturday in Starkville, Miss.
The Tigers (3-0) are looking for their second straight win at the ITA Kick-Off. Last season, Auburn swept through the Atlanta regional, defeating Georgia Tech and North Carolina to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Team Championships for the first time in program history.
Through three dual matches, Auburn has posted a 17-1 record in singles play and 9-0 in doubles. The Tigers earned 7-0 victories last Saturday over Jacksonville State and Mercer, then battled the elements and a tough Troy team for a 6-1 win on Tuesday.
Indiana (1-2) comes into the weekend 23rd in the latest ITA rankings. The Hoosiers dropped their first two matches, falling 4-3 to No. 41 NC State and 5-2 to No. 9 Kentucky. Indiana earned their initial win of the season Wednesday with a 7-0 sweep of Wright State.
Auburn is 3-2 all-time against Indiana in dual match competition. This is the first meeting between the programs since 1992, when Auburn claimed a 4-2 victory.
Along with the Tigers and Hoosiers, a pair of SEC teams will be competing in Starkville this weekend. Host Mississippi State enters the weekend ranked No. 11 in the nation, and LSU comes in at No. 25. The Bulldogs are 2-0 with wins over Texas Tech and Rice, and LSU won its opening match over Southern Miss to start 1-0.
