AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn’s men’s tennis team heads to Waco, Texas to face its toughest competition of the season so far as the Tigers take on Drake on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the 2014 Men’s ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Baylor at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The Tigers (3-0) are looking to advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships for second time in three years. Last season, Auburn nearly made its second straight appearance in the ITA Indoor Championships, but suffered a 4-3 defeat against Mississippi State.
“We played a couple of years ago and it was a really tough match. We won 4-2 and it was extremely tough, long match,” Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. “I expect an extremely tough match against them. I hope we’re mentally and physically ready to play them this weekend.”
Auburn has posted a perfect 18-0 record in singles through the first three dual matches of the season, losing just one set. The Tigers earned a 7-0 victory over Troy on Wednesday night indoors at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
No. 32 Drake (2-1) enters the weekend after defeating SMU 4-1 on Monday. The Bulldogs opened the dual match season last Friday with a 4-3 victory over Northern Illinois, before falling to No. 25 Tulsa 4-1 on Sunday. The Tigers are 2-0 all-time against Drake, knocking off the Bulldogs 4-1 in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Along with Drake, Baylor and Boise State will also compete at the two-day event. Baylor comes into the weekend ranked No. 7 in the ITA team rankings as the Bears open their 2014 dual match season. Boise State is 1-1 on the year after falling to Northwestern 5-2 on Jan. 16. The Broncos defeated Montana State 7-0 on Jan. 17 in their first match of the year.
