NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Auburn junior Tim Puetz and sophomore Alex Stamchev advanced in doubles play on day one of the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held on the campus of Yale University.
The pair opened competition Thursday morning, facing Diego Cubas and Ivan Machado of South Carolina in the beginning round of the 16-team tournament. Puetz and Stamchev picked up the 8-6 victory over Cubas and Machado to advance to the quarterfinals.
Puetz took part in the 32-person tournament, going against Georgia Tech's Guillermo Gomez. Puetz battled but lost in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-3).
Stamchev and Puetz continue competition on Friday morning as they face third-seeded Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford. Puetz will face South Carolina's Cubas in the consolation draw on Friday afternoon.
