Two Doubles Titles, Three Singles Finalists in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA - Auburn won doubles titles in two flights and had three singles players advance to the finals in their respective flights Saturday on a successful second day at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships. The team of senior Andreas Mies and sophomore Lukas Ollert captured the title in the first doubles flight, defeating Idan Mark and Dominik Koepfer of Tulane, 8-3, on Saturday morning. And the team of senior Lucas Lopasso and junior Dennis Lengsfeld took down Alabama's team of David Vieyra and Daniil Proskura in dramatic fashion, winning 9-8 with a 7-1 edge in the tiebreaker. In a consolation draw match, the third-flight team of senior Michael Wardell and sophomore Lucian Gheorghe picked up a win over Southern Miss' pairing of Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar, 9-8 (5). Mies, Ollert and Lopasso all advanced to the finals in their respective singles flights as well. Mies, ranked 11th nationally in singles, will play for the first flight title after a pair of wins Saturday, defeating Furman's Joel Cook, 6-1, 6-3, and Tulane's Idan Mark, 6-0, 6-3. Ollert advanced to the second flight final with wins over MTSU's Yannick Born, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Southern Miss' Andrew Goodwin, 6-0, 6-3. And Lopasso will play for the third flight championship after wins over Samford's Alex Sajonz, 6-4, 6-2, and Alabama's Carlos Taborga, 6-2, 7-5. All three championship matches will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. Mies will face Samford's Zac Dunkle, Ollert will take on Alabama's Jarryd Botha, and Lopasso will face West Alabama's Nestor Vargas. Lengsfeld defeated Luke Synn of Furman in a second-round match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, but dropped his third-round match to Vargas, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Lengsfeld will play in the flight three third-place match against Taborga at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Wardell won his second round match in flight four over USM's Inaki Belloso, 6-2, 6-2, before falling in the third round to Alabama's Harris Barnard, 6-2, 6-0. He will play in the third-place match at 9 a.m. Sunday against Furman's Richard Casagrande. Casagrande defeated Gheorghe in a second-round match Saturday, 6-4, 6-1, and then Gheorghe fell again in his third-round match against Samford's Austin Akers, 6-0, 6-2.
