Men's Tennis Wins 10 of 12 to Open Alabama Tournament

TUSCALOOSA - The Auburn men's tennis team won all six of their singles matches and four of six doubles matches Friday in a successful opening day at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships. The Auburn doubles pairings got the day off to a good start with a pair of wins in both the first and second flights. The team of Andreas Mies and Lukas Ollert went 2-for-2 on the day with a pair of 8-1 wins, defeating UAB's Chris Helliar and David Zimmerman in the first round, then taking down Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin of Southern Miss in the second round. Likewise, the team of Lucas Lopasso and Dennis Lengsfeld earned a pair of wins of their own in flight two, defeating USM's Vasco Valverde and Inaki Belloso 8-1 before coming back with an 8-5 win over Middle Tennessee's Ettore Zito and Christoph Lang. The team of Michael Wardell and Lucian Gheorghe dropped both their doubles matches Friday, falling to South Alabama's Blake Gregor and Daniel Leitner, 9-8 (6), to open play in the third flight. In the consolation bracket, Wardell and Gheorghe fell 8-2 against Adam Drysdale and Anton Ivanov of West Alabama. In singles, 11th-ranked Mies breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jose Luque of Jackson State in flight one. The second flight saw Ollert sprint past UWA's Ivanov, 6-0, 6-1. Lopasso and Lengsfeld were both winners in flight three with Lopasso downing Furman's Sven Ivanokvic, 6-0, 6-3, and Lengsfeld earning a straight-sets win over Gregor, 6-3, 6-4. Wardell went three sets with UAB's Korhan Ates, pulling out a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win, and Gheorge took down Tulane's Takuma Ohashi in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Play continues Saturday in all four singles and doubles flights.
