Puetz; Stamchev Advances To Doubles Quarterfinals At Wilson/ITA South Regional

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Auburn men's tennis team continued play on day two of the Wilson/ITA South Regional in New Orleans on the campuses of Tulane and University of New Orleans.
The top-seeded doubles team of junior Tim Puetz and sophomore Alex Stamchev picked up two wins to push through rounds of 32 and 16. The pair opened play with an 8-6 win over Tulane's Adam Bernstein and Ethan Frenkel. They continued their run with a dominating 8-0 victory over Mississippi State's Max Gregor and Tanner Stump.
Puetz had a successful day in singles play, advancing to the quarterfinals in the singles main draw. Puetz started the day with a three-set victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) over Louisiana-Lafayette's Carlin Murray. He concluded Friday's competition with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ricky Doverspike of Alabama.
Also competing in the singles main draw was Stamchev, who went 1-1 on the day. Stamchev topped LSU's Cody Loup (6-3, 6-1), but fell to Mississippi State's Louis Cant (6-2, 6-1).
Senior Nick Maurillo, junior Alex Jorne and freshmen Davis Taylor and Michael Wardell competed in the consolation singles for Auburn. Maurillo came from behind to defeat Tulane's Adam Bernstein in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 10-8), while Wardell topped Centenary's Micah Threadgill (6-1, 6-1). Jorne fell to Lucas Viel (6-3, 6-2) and Taylor lost to LSU's Stefan Szacinski (6-1, 7-5).
Puetz and Stamchev will face Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Tucker Vorster of Mississippi in double quarterfinals on Saturday. Puetz will take on Louis Cant of Mississippi State in singles quarterfinals as well.
