ATLANTA - Taking a full squad out for the first time this season, the Auburn men's tennis team went 9-3 in singles play and 1-2 in doubles, advancing three players to the quarterfinals in their respective divisions at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

"It was out first time taking the majority of the team and overall we had a fairly successful day," said head coach Eric Shore. "We have some areas to work on, but we'll go back out there tomorrow and get some more match play in."

Shore said the biggest advantage offered at the tournament is the match-play experience gained by the tournament format.

"A couple of our guys need matches and they got exactly what they needed today," said Shore. "A lot of it worked out the way we wanted today and they have as good a chance as anybody to take home some wins."

Senior Pawel Dilaj led the way for Auburn, advancing to the quarterfinals in the "A" draw. He defeated Georgia's Christian Vitulli 6-3, 6-4 in his first match and followed up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Anze Cevka (Georgia State).

Dilaj will take on Georgia Tech's Miguel Muguruza, the No. 3 overall seed, at 9 a.m., Saturday for a chance at the semifinals.

Junior Alexey Tsyrenov downed Middle Tennessee State's Joao Paliello 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the "A" draw before falling to top-seeded Jamie Hunt (Georgia), 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Four Tigers competed in the "B" draw with two set to compete Saturday morning in quarterfinal matches.

Newcomer Alex Petropoulos went three sets against Georgia Tech's George Gvelesiani, but pulled out the 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win. Petropoulos then downed Vanderbilt's Scott Lieberman, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to a quarterfinal matchup against Georgia's Chris Motes. Their match is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start on Saturday.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals in the "B" draw is No. 2 overall seed Terence Nugent. He beat MTSU's Derrick Davison 6-2, 7-5 before taking out Beck (UK), 6-3, 6-2.

Also in action in the "B" draw were Hunter Mills and Nick Maurillo. Mills defeated GSU's Augusto Alvarado, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Georgia Tech's Doug Kenny, 6-2, 6-3.

For Maurillo, after dropping his first-round match to Diego Machuca (6-2, 6-1), he moved to the consolation bracket where he defeated Jason Basile (Furman), 6-4, 6-1. He will now play Tennessee's William Lang at 8 a.m., Saturday.

The Tigers went 1-2 in doubles play with the duo of Petropoulos and Tsyrenov downed Louisville's Kenneth Nordheim and Morten Silversten, 8-5. They will now play Georgia Tech's Muguruza / Eliot Potvin at 1 p.m., Saturday.
