AUBURN - The Auburn men's tennis team remains perfect after the Tigers earned their second sweep of the season on Friday, defeating Southern Mississippi, 7-0.
The win improves Auburn to 2-0 for the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-4. The win marks the Tigers 11th straight over Southern Miss and is the fifth 7-0 win over the Eagles.
Auburn started the match off on the right note, winning two of three doubles matches to earn the point. Alex Petropoulos and Nick Maurillo got the first victory, 8-6, over brothers Oscar and Diego Machuca.
Lukas Marsoun and Tim Puetz quickly followed suit with an 8-6 victory of their own over Andrew Poole and Markus Wessinghage.
Southern Mississippi's Domagoj Anic and Jan Burmeister defeated Pawel Dilaj and Milan Krnjetin, 8-6, to finish out doubles play and give Southern Miss its only victory of the day.
"I was not too happy with our doubles play today," head coach Eric Shore said. "We were playing from behind for the first part of the set, but I was proud of the way the guys worked hard and battled back to get the win."
Freshman Puetz picked up where he left off against Troy, defeating opponent Oscar Manchuca in a quick match, 6-1, 6-3, to start singles play. Alex Petropoulos also made quick work of his opponent, Burmeister, 6-0, 6-1.
Soon to follow was Krnjetin with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Strate Krstevski that sealed the win for Auburn. Dilaj was not far behind him with a win over Andrew Poole, 6-2, 6-1.
Marsoun came back to win his second set 6-0 after losing the first set 6-4 to Anic. Marsoun then battled through a first-to-10 third set tie-breaker to beat Anic 10-7.
Maurillo wrapped up the day as he finished an exhausting match after two set-deciding tie-breakers. Maurillo won the first set, 7-6, and then lost the second, 6-4, to Diego Manchuca.
In the match deciding tie-breaker, Maurillo and Manchuca battled back and forth until Maurillo finally pulled out the win 11-9.
"He fought hard, and I am proud of the way he stuck with it," Shore said of Maurillo. "His win definitely gives our team momentum going into Sunday's match against Arizona State."
Arizona State leads the all-time series 8-3, but all three wins have come since Shore has been head coach.
"It should be a good match-up," Shore said of the Arizona State team. "It will be a chance for us to really see what we are made of."
The match between Auburn and the Sun Devils is set to begin at 12 p.m., Sunday at the City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarbrough Tennis Center.
