WACO, Texas – Auburn’s 28th-ranked men’s tennis team used strong doubles play and picked up a trio of three-set victories to continue its unbeaten start to the season, knocking off No. 32 Drake 4-1 on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Tigers (4-0) moved to 8-0 in doubles play this season with a pair of 6-3 victories and won three of the four singles matches, with all four going to three sets. Drake fell 2-2 to this season.
“It was a tough match tonight, but we found a way to win,” Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. “The top of our lineup stepped up tonight. Dennis Lengsfeld was a warrior tonight, winning from a set and two match points down to clinch the match for us by winning his match.”
Auburn continued with its unbeaten mark in doubles this season and began play with a 6-3 victory by the No. 37 pair of Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert over Drake’s Ben Lott and Alen Salibasic. Joseph Van Dooren and Dante Saleh picked up the doubles point for the Tigers with a 6-3 win against Drake’s Matt Frost and Ben Mullis.
The Tigers won the first set in all six singles matches, but had to battle back after dropping the second set in each match. Lukas Ollert, playing in the No. 1 spot, posted a 6-5 (7-0), 1-6, 6-2 win for Auburn giving the Tigers their first win in singles of the night. No. 112 Daniel Cochrane picked up the win in the No. 2 spot in the lineup by taking down Drake’s Ben Lott 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
The Bulldogs got on the board and cut Auburn’s lead to 3-1 with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win by No. 123 Matt Frost in the No. 4 spot over the Tigers’ Petar Tomic. The loss marked the first defeat for the freshman this season.
Lengsfeld claimed the match for Auburn with a gutsy performance in the No. 3 spot. The senior battled from a set down and survived a pair of match points against Drake’s Robin Goodman to win 2-6, 6-5 (9-7), 6-4.
Auburn will face No. 7 Baylor in the championship round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday at 3 p.m. The winner advances to February’s National Indoor Team Championship in Houston.
