LA QUINTA, Calif. - Former Tiger Will Claxton earned his 2012 PGA TOUR card Monday, wrapping up the six-round 2012 Qualifying School final stage tied for 18th at 10-under.
The final stage, which played six rounds from Nov. 30 through Dec. 5, was held at TPC Stadium and the Nicklaus Championship Course at PGA West. A total of 172 professionals fought for PGA and Nationwide tour cards, as well as professional exemptions for the 2012 season.
The top 25 players out of La Quinta not already possessing a 2012 PGA TOUR card earned their card following Monday's final round.
Claxton, who led the tournament through its opening four rounds, fought through the closing two rounds of what is considered one of the most pressure packed competition in sports. A fifth-round 76 dropped the class of 2005 Auburn graduate into a tie for fifth at 11-under.
Holding a three-stroke cushion above the cut with four holes to go, Claxton rattled of four-consecutive pars as the afternoon breezes kicked in.
Claxton will join former Tigers Jason Dufner, Roland Thatcher and Gary Christian on the 2012 TOUR, the most Auburn has ever had in one PGA season.
Of a total 1,263 golfers who made their bid during the 2011 Q-School, six former Auburn golfers made it to the final stage. Additional PGA and Nationwide Tour exemptions, yet to be released, will determine the playing status the additional five other Tigers who advanced to La Quinta.
Reid Edstrom and Thatcher each tied for 51st in the 160-player field. The pair finished the event tied at 5-under, just three strokes under the PGA Tour card cutline.
Thatcher, who finished 127th on the 2011 PGA TOUR money list, was looking to increase his status on TOUR for 2012 while Edstrom was looking to advance his stock following a strong season on the NGA Tour.
Lee Williams tied for 72nd at 2-under followed by Glenn Northcutt in 147th and Jimmy Brandt in 152nd.
Auburn hosted both a pre-qualifier, at Moore's Mill Club, and a first stage event, at the AU Club.
