Sept. 20, 2008
AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 25 Auburn men's golf team returns to action Monday at the Shoal Creek Invitational held at the par 72, 7,114-yard Shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham. Senior Glenn Northcutt will play the No. 1 position for the Tigers while true freshmen John Stembridge and Kyle Kopsick play at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Junior Cole Moreland is in the No. 4 position while redshirt freshman Cory Gilmer makes his Auburn debut in the No. 5 spot. Auburn re-entered the Golfweek top-25 after being excluded from the publication's preseason rankings. The Tigers finished the 2007-08 season in 17th. Following his top-10 performance at the Carpet Capital, Northcutt currently ranks 20th in Golfweek's Sept. 18 individual collegiate rankings with a 69.30 Sagarin rating. Northcutt is 81-6-2 this season with a 5-2 record against top-25 competition. The 12-team field features five teams ranked in Golfweek's top-25, including No. 25 Auburn, No. 19 Texas Tech, No. 20 Ole Miss, No. 21 Wake Forest, No. 24 East Tennessee State, LSU, Oklahoma, Tulsa, Baylor, North Florida, Georgia Southern and tournament host UAB. Texas Tech won the 2007 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate and returns to defend its title. "Shoal Creek is a great course," said head coach Mike Griffin. "It never lets up. Every hole is a good one. The strength of this golf course is that if you can make a few birdies on key holes, you'll be in pretty good shape." Shoal Creek Golf Club played host to the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championships, the 1986 U.S. Amateur and the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur. Auburn is making its third appearance in the Shoal Creek Invitational, finishing third in 2007 with senior Patton Kizzire leading all Tigers in a tie for fourth.
Following Sunday's practice round, the teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes in Tuesday's final round. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstat.com. |
