Auburn Men's Golf To Open Season At Carpet Capital Collegiate .
AUBURN --- The No. 21 Auburn men's golf team is set to begin the 2007-08 season Friday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at par 72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club.
Senior Jay Moseley will play the No. 1 position for the Tigers while Senior Steven Groover occupies the No. 2 spot. Senior Patton Kizzire returns after winning the 2007 SEC Individual Championship last season to play No. 3. Senior Gordon Strother will play in the No. 4 slot and sophomore Brent Cooper will hold the No. 5 position.
The 18-team field features 12 teams ranked in Golfweek's preseason top 30 including No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia, No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Clemson, No. 9 Duke, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 12 Georgia Tech, No.
19 South Carolina, No. 21 Auburn, No. 22 Texas Tech, No. 23 Tennessee, and No. 28 Georgia State. Rounding out the field is Vanderbilt, North Carolina State, Augusta State and TCU.
"This is an outstanding tournament with many talented teams that are all among the top programs in the country," said Auburn head coach Mike Griffin. "It feels good to get the season underway, and we are ready."
Auburn is making its 18th appearance in the Carpet Capital Collegiate, having an all-time record of 139-130-1 (.541) in the event.
Auburn's best finish came in 1997 when the Tigers finished won the championship with a 289-309-289--887, one stroke ahead of Texas (888).
Auburn participated in a practice round Thursday before opening first round play Friday in the three-day, 54-hole tournament. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
