Fresh off of a 13th-place finish in the 2013 Men's Golf NCAA Championships, Auburn head coach Nick Clinard and the Auburn men's golf team open up the 2013-14 season this weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Tournament at The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga.
"The Farm is in excellent shape and will definitely test our short games and course management," said Clinard, whose team was ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek preseason rankings. "The course puts a premium on controlling your golf ball inside 150 yards and putting well. We're looking forward to being competitive and playing well this week."
Junior Michael Johnson, who was recently named a Top-50 Player to Watch by Golf World, returns after compiling a 72.85 stroke average in 2012-13, which is the lowest stroke average of any returnee. He closed out his season with a 38th-place finish at the NCAA Championships and collected 17 rounds at par or better, 11 sub-par rounds and five rounds in the 60s.
Senior Niclas Carlsson (73.45 stroke average) and sophomore Jake Mondy (73.57) join Johnson as top returnees along with senior Blake Soni (74.83) and junior Dan Stringfellow (75.71) while a host of talented freshmen have been added into the mix.
"It's exciting to get the season started at a great venue, The Farm," Clinard added. "With such a young team this year both (assistant) Coach (Evan) Osteen and myself are looking forward to the team continuing to improve as the year goes on. We've had excellent senior leadership thus far and we have tons of talent on the team. It should be a fun and competitive year."
Auburn's next competition will take place Sept. 21-22 in Zionsville, Ind., at Wolf Run.
