CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – Auburn senior Michael Hebert defeated Australia’s Todd Sinnot 6-and-4 in the first round of match play on Wednesday at the U.S. Men’s Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Sinnot took the first lead of the match on the second hole after carding a birdie on the 422-yard par-4. On No. 3, Hebert responded with a birdie to square the match. Sinnot retook the lead on No. 4 with a par, before Hebert came with back-to-back wins to retake the lead.
After halving the next three holes, the Orlando, Fla., native then extended his lead to go 2 up after the front-nine. Hebert closed out the match with four straight wins on Nos. 11-14 to advance to the second round.
Hebert will take on Patrick Newcomb at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday in the second round. Live stats for the U.S. Men’s Amateur can be found on www.usga.org.
