Auburn Graduate Assistant Jay Moseley Wins U.S. Amateur Sectional At The AU Club
Aug. 4, 2008
Auburn, Ala. - Auburn graduate assistant Jay Moseley and redshirt freshman Cory Gilmer claimed two-of-three qualifying spots to the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship after Monday's 36-hole sectional at the Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms. Moseley took first in the AU Club qualifier after carding a 5-under 139. Entering the day's second round in a tie for first with fellow Tigers Gilmer and Will Swift, Moseley gained separation following a 2-under front nine. Despite dropping a stroke after the turn, the lead held and Moseley walked into the clubhouse the victor. Gilmer and Swift both carded rounds of 68 and 75, finishing regulation in a tie for third. After entering a sudden-death playoff to determine who would advance, the two were even through three after carding birdies on No. 1 and pars on 2 and 3. Both were forced to chip onto the fourth green with Gilmer's ball stopping two feet from the cup. Swift two-putted from 12 feet out while Gilmer's first effort was successful, earning him the third and final qualifying spot from the AU Club sectional. Georgia Southern's Jordan Johnston (71-71--142) finished in second. Other Tigers advancing to the U.S. Amateur are junior Cole Moreland and true freshman Kyle Kopsick from the Keller, Texas and Watertown, Wis., qualifiers, respectively. The U.S. Amateur will be held at the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., August 18-24. The tournament consists of two days of stroke play, with the leading 64 competitors then playing a knockout competition held at match play to decide the champion. Auburn golf returns to action Sept. 12-14 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. Aug. 4, 2008 FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, Contact: Gary Thorne, (334) 663-6650.
