Jake Mondy wins Virginia State Amateur

June 30, 2014

Jake Mondy, who will be a junior on the Auburn golf team next season, won the 101st Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship at Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va., over the weekend.

Mondy defeated Jordan Utley, 1-up, to claim his second VSGA Amateur title in the last three years, sinking a six-foot birdie putt on the 36th hole.

"You always dream about making putts like that on the last hole to win a big golf tournament," Mondy told Chris Lang of the VSGA. "Ten, 20 years from now, looking back at it, it will probably be a pretty cool memory."

Mondy won 2-and-1 in the round of 32 and 6-and-4 in the round of 16, both of which were played on Thursday, June 26. On Friday he won 5-and-3 in the quarterfinals and 7-and-6 in the semifinals before his 1-up victory in Saturday's final.

Mondy had previously won the VSGA Amateur Championship in 2012 at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach.
