Ryan Benton finished second at the Alabama Amateur Championship and Will Long tied for third at the Palmetto Amateur as Auburn golfers play in events across the country during the summer.
Benton, from Dothan, shot 72-68-66-75--281 (-7) in the 98th Men's State Amateur Championship to finish a stroke behind the winner. Played at Lakewood Golf Club, his third-round 66 tied for the low round of the event along with one other player. During the second and third rounds, he carded 12 birdies against just two bogeys. For the weekend he played the par-3s at even-par and the par-5s at minus-8.
Michael Johnson, who redshirted this past season, also played in the Alabama Amateur and finished eighth. From Birmingham, he shot 74-70-70-72--286 (-2) as only nine players finished the tournament below par. He too found success on the par-5s, shooting a collective minus-8 over the four rounds.
Long, from Gastonia, N.C., shot 65-68-73-72--278 (-2) to finish tied for third at the Palmetto Amateur played at Palmetto Golf Club. His first-round 65 tied for the low-round of the tournament. Long collected 20 birdies and 36 pars over four rounds, playing the par-4s at even-par and the par-5s at minus-5.
