HOOVER, Ala. - Auburn sophomore golfer Michael Johnson won the 97th Men's Alabama State Amateur Championship on Sunday after shooting a 16-under 272 at the Hoover Country Club. Johnson defeated Robby Shelton IV by two strokes.

"This week I really just tried to play well every day," Johnson said. "I really didn't think about where I stood until the last day and I was fortunate enough to get off to a quick start today, which allowed me to play well."

Johnson, who began the day at 11-under, started the round with an eagle on the par-5 No. 3 before moving to 14-under for the tournament with a birdie on No. 4. The Birmingham, Ala., native birdied No. 8 but bogeyed No. 9 to finish the front-9 at 3-under.

After making the turn, Johnson birdied No. 10 before firing a birdie on No. 15 to finish at 5-under for the round. Johnson carded an eagle in every round of the State Am and carded 16 total birdies for the tournament.
