AUBURN – The No. 18 Auburn men’s golf team will play in the NCAA Championship, Tuesday through Sunday at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Atlanta. The Tigers advanced to the Championship after tying for second at the NCAA Columbus Regional.
The Championship will begin with a 30-team, 54-hole tournament that will narrowed to eight teams. After the conclusion of the 54-holes, the NCAA Individual Champion will be announced and the eight remaining teams will begin a seeded match play tournament to determine the overall winner.
“We are very excited,” Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. “We are looking forward to going to Atlanta. It is a great golf course and is a great venue. I think it fits our team very well. If we can put it all together with all five guys, we have a very good chance this week.”
Senior All-American Dominic Bozzelli will be in the No. 1 position for the Tigers, coming off a runner-up finish at the NCAA Regional. Bozzelli shot a 1-over 214 at the Regional for his team-high eighth top-20 finish of the season. The Pittsford N.Y. native is third on the team in scoring at 73.10 and leads the team in rounds in the 60s with six.
“Regionals went well and we accomplished our goals,” Bozzelli said. “I like where all of our games are at. We all seem to be playing really well. I am just focusing on hitting the fairways and the greens. That is all you can do. I like our chances if we can put it all together. It is all about putting four good scores together.”
All-SEC sophomore Michael Johnson is in the No. 2 spot for Auburn following a tie for seventh finish at the NCAA Regional. Johnson is second on the team in scoring at 73.05 and has four top-10 finishes on the campaign. Johnson is first on the team in rounds at par or better with 15 and second in sub-par rounds with 10.
All-SEC senior Michael Hebert is in the No. 3 position and is Auburn’s leading scorer at 72.92. Hebert has three top-five finishes including a tie for fifth at the SEC Championship. Hebert leads the team in rounds at par or better with 15 and sub-par rounds with 11.
All-SEC junior Niclas Carlsson is in the fourth spot and is coming off a tie for 25th at the NCAA Regional.
