AUSTIN, Texas----Auburn senior Glenn Northcutt and sophomore Cole Moreland open NCAA Men's Golf Southwest Regional first round play Thursday at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

Moreland will tee off at 10:30 am Central from the No. 1 tee in the same group as Jackson State's Clay Myers and Texas State's Corey Robertson. Northcutt will tee off two groups later at 10:50 am alongside Jackson State's Brett Benson and Texas State's Jeff Gerlich.

'The golf course played real tough today, especially when the wind kicked up,' said Northcutt after Wednesday's practice round. 'It will be a good test, and I will have to play well. I am ready to go. If any part of your game is a little off, this golf course will identify it.

'It is a demanding golf course. Everything has to be sharp to score and put together a good round. If you miss a shot here or there, this golf course will make you pay for it. I feel like I am ready for it. I played well today, and I am excited to get it going.'

Northcutt, who is the Southwest Regional's top individual seed, has a 74.30 stroke average this season and was the runner-up at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and recorded four top 10 finishes. The Dothan, Ala., native tied for second in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, tied for seventh in the Carpet Capital Collegiate and finished 10th in both the E-Z-Go Schenkel Invitational and the Reunion Intercollegiate.

Moreland, who is the Southwest Regional No. 3 seed, edged Nortcutt for the team's low stroke average at 74.27 and had two top 10 finishes on the season. The Austin, Texas, native tied for fourth in the John Burns Intercollegiate and tied for sixth in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

'It feels great to be home, and I have been looking forward to this since we received the phone call (that announced regionals),' said Moreland. 'I am pumped, and I am real excited. I hit a lot of good shots today. If you don't hit it where you want to, it is going to bite you back. On the other hand, you can get the ball near the holes without hitting perfect shots, which is good.'

Northcutt played the University of Texas Golf Club as a sophomore when Auburn played in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in the spring of 2007. He tied for 33rd with a 3-over 79-68-147.

Auburn assistant Ryan Cabbage will coach both Northcutt and Moreland this week while head coach Mike Griffin has to remain in Auburn as he will be undergoing surgery next week for a herniated disc in his neck.

Fifth-ranked Stanford is the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Regional followed by No. 8 Florida, No. 19 Texas Tech, No. 25 Texas, No. 21 UNLV, California, Lamar, Michigan, Texas-Arlington, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, New Mexico State and Jackson State.

The 10 individuals are Auburn's Northcutt as the No. 1 seed followed by New Orleans' Ken Looper, Auburn's Moreland, New Orleans' Adam Cornelson, Southeastern Louisiana's Cedric Scotto, Texas State's Jeff Gerlich, Southeastern Louisiana's Matthew Carvell, Texas State's Corey Roberson, Sam Houston's Fergal Rafferty and Jacksonville State's Gonzalo Berlin.

The top five teams and top individual not on one of those five teams in each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, May 26-30. The NCAA Regionals went from a larger three-site format to a smaller six-site format this year.

    The three-day, 54-hole tournament will feature live-scoring at www.golfstat.com.
