The NCAA announced the field for the six 2014 NCAA Men's Golf Regional sites on Monday. Auburn will be one of 14 teams to play in the Auburn Regional, which Auburn will host at the Auburn University Club May 15-17.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to play on our home course along with an outstanding field of teams," Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. "We have to play well to advance and I know our guys will be up the challenge. We have had a very good spring season and I look forward to that continuing next week."
The remaining 13 teams in the East Regional are Alabama, Virginia Tech, Texas, New Mexico, BYU, Kennesaw State, Colorado, Louisville, UNCG, UC-Davis, Sam Houston State, St. John's and Alabama State.
The field will also include individuals Blake Morris (Ole Miss), JD Tomlinson (Florida), Jared Bettcher (Troy), Marco Iten (Austin Peay) and Theodore Lederhausen (Harvard).
Auburn is coming off of a third-place showing at the SEC Championships. Auburn shot a school-record 829 over three days at St. Simons Island and was led by senior Niclas Carlsson, who finished in a four-way tie for fifth at 5-under. Freshman Matt Gilchrest finished at 2-under to finish in a tie for 13th and classmate Will Long was a stroke back at 1-under, tied for 19th. Jake Mondy tied for 32nd at plus-2 and Daniel Stringfellow tied for 56th at plus-9.
Auburn claimed three tournament wins this spring, winning the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, the Tiger Invitational and the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
Carlsson carries a 71.03 season stroke average into the regional. In 33 rounds he has shot 21 rounds at par-or-better, 16 sub-par rounds and 11 rounds in the 60s. Gilchrest has a 71.50 stroke average in 30 rounds and has recorded 18 rounds at par-or-better, 14 sub-par rounds and eight rounds in the 60s. Mondy has a 72.12 stroke average in 33 rounds, Stringfellow a 72.76 stroke average in 33 rounds and Long a 72.85 stroke average in 27 rounds.
Auburn is playing in a regional for the fifth consecutive season and the 24th time overall. Auburn is in search of its 19th NCAA Championship appearance and its third straight, finishing 13th in 2013 and tied for 15th in 2012.
Carlsson has been a part of each of the past three regional squads, finishing tied for ninth in 2011, tied for 16th in 2012 and tied for 25th in 2013. Mondy, a sophomore, finished tied for 25th at last year's regional.
Auburn has hosted the NCAA East Regional twice before. In 1994 Auburn tied for ninth when it was held on the Lake Course at Grand National. In 2003 the Auburn University Club was the host site and Auburn finished 10th.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 23-28 in Wichita, Kan., at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Live scoring for the entire three-day regional will be available on GolfStat.com.
