Freshman Matt Gilchrest was named the SEC Golfer and Freshman of the Week following his four-stroke win at the UK Bluegrass Invitational last weekend, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
The tournament win was the first of Gilchrest's Auburn career and his second straight top-3 finish after placing third at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate March 23-25.
Gilchrest shot a 68-68-71--207 to finish at 9-under, and was one of only two competitors to shoot three sub-par rounds at the Bluegrass Invitational. His first two rounds also represented his fifth and sixth rounds in the 60's this season.
Gilchrest was tied for the lead after both the first and second rounds before winning the title outright.
With a 71.74 stroke average over 27 rounds, Gilchrest has the 12th-best stroke average in the SEC and the second-lowest of any freshman.
Gilchrest is the third Auburn golfer to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season, joining Blake Messer (Feb. 19) and Will Long (March 5).
As a team Auburn moved up from 25th to No. 22 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll, also released on Wednesday.
Auburn will play in the Capital City Club Match Play on Saturday, April 19, before heading to the SEC Tournament April 25-27 at Seaside Golf Club at Sea Island, Ga.
