March 12, 2009
AUBURN - The Auburn men's golf team will compete in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship Friday through Sunday at the par 72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. Senior Glenn Northcutt and junior Cole Moreland will play in the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Freshman Kyle Kopsick will play at No. 3, followed by freshman Will McCurdy at No. 4. Freshman John Stembridge will occupy the No. 5 slot. "Our freshmen enjoyed a much better outing this past week at the Seminole," said head coach Mike Griffin. "That is what we have been waiting for this spring. Each day we got at least two solid rounds from our three Freshmen, so they are maturing on schedule. Our most experienced players, Glenn and Cole, struggled at Golden Eagle, but I know they will have a good tournament in Las Vegas. We had a good week of practice, and I expect it to carry over into a solid performance this weekend." The 15-team field includes eight Top-25 teams including No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 USC, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Clemson, No. 8 Texas, No. 11 Florida, No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 20 Texas A&M, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, California, Charlotte, UCLA and UNLV. "The Southern Highlands tournament will have the strongest field by far that we have seen this Spring," said Griffin. "It remains to be seen if our youngsters have grown enough to perform well within this type of field and on this very challenging golf course. They are growing more confident with each passing event, and it is now time for them to move up to another level of play."
