The No. 20 Auburn men's golf team brought home a fifth-place finish at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, shooting a final round 281, which tied with two others for the second-best team score in Tuesday's play.
"The guys played very well today overall," Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. "We continue to prove we are a solid final round team which shows their mindset it strong. The future looks bright and I'm excited about the rest of the year."
Niclas Carlsson was Auburn's top finisher, carding a three-round plus-3 to finish tied for 12th. He shot a 68-72-73--213. For the tournament he recorded 10 birdies.
Matt Gilchrest finished two shots behind Carlsson with a three-round 215 (69-77-69) to finish plus-5 and tied for 18th. His final round included birdies on the par-4 fifth and on the par-3 eighth, 12th and 17th holes.
Daniel Stringfellow tied for 23rd at plus-6 (73-75-68--216) as he also had 10 birdies in the tournament, including five in Tuesday's round. He finished the front nine of Tuesday's round with birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth holes, all par-4s, and then birdied the par-3 12th and par-3 17th.
Auburn finished plus-17, behind Alabama (minus-11), Texas A&M (plus-5), UAB (plus-6) and Texas (plus-12).
Auburn returns to tournament action Oct. 18-20 when it travels to the US Collegiate at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.
