The No. 12 Auburn men's golf team is in 10th place after the first day of the Carpet Capital Collegiate, shooting a combined 7-over, 299 at The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga., on Friday afternoon.
"The golf course played tough today and we didn't manage our games very well," Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. "I look for us to rebound tomorrow and play the game better."
Freshman Matt Gilchrest had the low round for Auburn, shooting an even-par 72 to finish the day tied for 10th. The Southlake, Texas, native shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine, collecting birdies on the par-5 12th and par-4 14th and 16th holes as part of a five-birdie outing.
Senior Niclas Carlsson, from Enebyberg, Sweden, had four birdies on the day and finished a combined 2-over, tied for 23rd, carding 37s on both the front and back nine. Jake Mondy, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Va., shot a 3-over 75, shooting an even-par 36 on the back nine. He is tied for 33rd after the first day.
Junior Daniel Stringfellow (Roselle, Ill.) finished the day at plus-6 and freshman Will Long (Gastonia, N.C.) was plus-7 to round out the team scoring.
Freshman Victor Wiggins, who played as an individual, finished at plus-2 (74), birdieing the 18th to finish the back nine at 1-under.
The three-day competition continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
