Chattanooga, Tenn. - The sixth-seeded Auburn men's golf team is tied for eighth with a 3-under 281 after the NCAA East Regional first round at the par-71, 6,961-yard Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga. The top 10 teams in the 27-team field of the three-day, 54-hole tournament advance to the NCAA Championship.

Junior Glenn Northcutt fired a 4-under 67 to lead all Tigers and is currently tied for seventh individually. Seniors Steven Groover (71) and Patton Kizzire (71) are tied for 46th, senior Gordon Strother (72) is tied for 60th and All-SEC senior Jay Moseley (75) tied for 107th.

Narrowly avoiding the brunt of a strong storm system passing through the southeast, the Tigers played all 18 holes under a steady dose of light showers.

"Considering the conditions we played under," said Griffin, "and Jay (Moseley) not counting with the way he has carried us this year, I am pleased that we shot 3-under."

With Auburn starting the day from No. 10, Northcutt jumped to a quick start carding birdies on Nos. 11 and 13, closing the back nine with a bogie on No.18. After quickly taking back his lost stroke with a birdie on No. 2, Northcutt stuck a long distance approach within inches of the pin on the par-5, 583-yard No. 6, carding only four strokes on the hole. On the par-3, 162-yard No. 7, he would again land within feet of the hole, leading to back-to-back birdies coming down the stretch.

After making the turn at 1-over, Groover carded birdies at Nos. 1, 4 and 6 to counter bogies at No. 3 and 8, heading to the clubhouse at even-par.

Kizzire came out strong, carding three birdies through his first five holes only to drop five strokes through the next 10. With only three holes remaining on the day and sitting at 2-over, Kizzire pulled out birdies at Nos. 7 and 9 to break even.

"I am very happy," said Griffin. "We didn't shoot ourselves out of it. That's the last thing you want to do in the first round. The second round is moving day and we need to move in the right direction."

With three players in the top-3 on the individual leader board, second-ranked Georgia is in first place at 19-under 265 followed by Augusta State (273), SMU (276), Middle Tennessee State (278), Ole Miss (278), NC State (279), New Mexico State (280), Auburn, Virginia Tech (281), Charlotte (281), Colorado State (282), UT-Chattanooga (282), UC-Irvine (283), Coastal Carolina (285), Michigan State (285), Western Carolina (285), Duke (286), Virginia (286), East Tennessee State (286), Georgia State (287), UAB (287), South Carolina (288), Memphis (289), Western Illinois (293), North Florida (293), Ole Miss (293) and Jackson State (302).

Georgia's Hudson Swafford (65) and Augusta State's Henrik Norlander (65) are tied for the individual lead.

Auburn's team total of 281 and Northcutt's 67 are the lowest NCAA Regional first round totals in school history.

Auburn tees off the front nine in Friday's second round at 7:18 am EST with Duke and tournament host UT-Chattanooga. Live scoring of all three NCAA Regionals will be available via Golfstat (www.golfstat.com).
