WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – The No. 24 Auburn men’s golf team is in fifth after shooting a 7-under 281 in the Amer Ari Invitational first round at the King’s Course on Wednesday, trailing No. 5 UCLA and TCU by four strokes for the lead. No. 2 Texas (-9) is in third and No. 7 Washington (-8) is in fourth.
“I thought the guys played well and were very patient today,” head coach Nick Clinard said. “Mentally and physically, I like where we are at as a team.”
All-American senior Dominic Bozzelli, All-SEC sophomore Michael Johnson and All-SEC Michael Hebert are tied for 14th, each carding a 2-under 70. Bozzelli began the round with a birdie on No. 1 and moved to 2-under after another birdie on No. 5. The Pittsford, N.Y., native double bogeyed No. 7 to move back to even. After nine straight pars, Bozzelli birdied the final two holes to finish at 2-under.
Turning at even par, Johnson birdied Nos. 12 and 15 to move to 2-under but bogeyed No. 16 before closing with another birdie. Hebert, who began the day on the third hole, double bogeyed to start the day, but moved to 1-under par after birdies on Nos. 8, 10 and 11. Hebert moved back to even-par after bogeying No. 15, but finished the round birdeying two of the final three holes.
All-SEC junor Niclas Carlsson, who is tied for 23rd at 1-under par, had five birdies on the day. Redshirt sophomore Daniel Stringfellow is tied for 67th at 2-over, while redshirt freshman Jake Mondy, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 108th at 7-over.
