    Auburn Football Practice Report

    Dec. 19, 2009

AUBURN - The Auburn football team practiced for the fourth straight day Saturday, working out for more than an hour and a half at the practice fields behind the Athletics Complex. It marked the sixth bowl practice for the Tigers in preparation for their New Year's Day appearance in the Outback Bowl against Northwestern.

The Tigers practiced in shells, and despite wind-chill factors that dipped below 40 degrees, the Auburn coaching staff was pleased with the team's enthusiasm and spirit.

Auburn started the practice with special teams drills, then moved on to individual and position drills. Following more special teams work, the latter half of practice consisted primarily of the offense and defense working against the scout teams.

Following practice, defensive coordinator Ted Roof talked about the challenges preparing for the Northwestern offense. The Outback Bowl will mark Roof's third straight season coaching against the Wildcats, as he coached against Northwestern both in 2008 while at Minnesota and in 2007 while at Duke.

"They do a great job. They're a well-coached football team," said Roof. "(Their offense) spreads you out and makes you defend the entire width of the field, and that's a change from the last couple of offenses that we played.

"They move guys all over the place - it doesn't matter what personnel grouping they're in. They get in very non-traditional formations out of certain groupings, so they present a lot of problems."

The Tigers will take Sunday off before returning to the practice fields Monday at 2 p.m. CT.

Auburn (7-5) will meet Northwestern (8-4) in the 2010 Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 in Tampa, Fla. The game will kick off at 10 a.m. CT in Raymond James Stadium and be nationally televised by ESPN.

Tickets for the Outback Bowl are $70 and may be purchased through the Auburn Ticket Office via auburntigers.com or by calling 1-800-AUB-1957.
