AUBURN - Junior quarterback Cam Newton was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year, and joined senior offensive tackle Lee Ziemba and junior defensive tackle Nick Fairley on the Walter Camp and CBSSports.com All-America teams on Thursday.
Newton becomes the third Auburn football player to be named the Walter Camp Player of the Year, joining Pat Sullivan (1971) and Bo Jackson (1985).
Newton and Fairley were named to the All-America First Team by both the Walter Camp Football Foundation and CBSSports.com, while Ziemba was a Walter Camp first-team selection and made CBSSports.com's second team. Auburn was the only school to place three members of its team on the 26-man Walter Camp All-America First Team.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year and All-America team are selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Other finalists for the Walter Camp 2010 Player of the Year award included Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and Oregon running back LaMichael James.
Newton has accounted for a nation-best 49 touchdowns this season, setting Auburn single-season records for passing touchdowns (28) and rushing touchdowns (20) while also catching one. He is one of just three players to rush for and pass for 20 touchdowns in a single season. Newton leads the nation in passing efficiency (188.16) and leads the SEC in rushing (108.4) and total offense (307.5). He also became the first player in SEC history to total 2,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in a single season.
Fairley leads the SEC and ranks eighth nationally with a school record 21 tackles for loss, and also ranks second in the league with 10.5 quarterback sacks. The 2010 Lombardi Award winner is fifth on the team with 55 tackles this season, and has also recovered two fumbles, forced one fumble, intercepted a pass and has 21 quarterback hurries. He has helped Auburn rank 11th nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 111.7 yards per game.
Ziemba has started all 51 games since arriving at Auburn during his true freshman year, setting a school record for total starts and consecutive starts. This season they helped Auburn's record-setting offense lead the SEC in scoring offense (42.7), total offense (497.7), rushing offense (287.2) and first downs (24.3). The Tigers rushed for more than 300 yards against six consecutive SEC opponents for the first time in school history, and have scored at least 50 points a school-record six times this season.
Newton, Fairley and Ziemba, along with other members of the Walter Camp 2010 All-America team, will be honored at the organization's national awards banquet on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Conn. In addition, the Foundation will honor three individuals - NFL Hall-of-Famer Chuck Bednarik (Pennsylvania) and former Walter Camp All-Americans and NFL All-Pros Tedy Bruschi (Arizona) and Will Shields (Nebraska) - with major awards.
