AUBURN, Ala. — Nick Marshall had one of the best rushing games for a quarterback in Auburn history and Chris Davis scored on a punt return as part of an NCAA record-breaking return game in Saturday's 55-23 win over Tennessee.
The SEC recognized both Auburn players for their efforts by naming them the league's players of the week Monday.
Marshall was named SEC offensive player of the week after rushing for 214 yards and two touchdowns. It tied for the third-best rushing game for a quarterback in school history. Marshall was also named one of the Manning Award weekly winners as well. Davis was named the SEC special teams player of the week after returning a punt 85 yards for a TD and being part of a punt/kickoff game that averaged 44.85 yards per return, an NCAA record.
It's the second time Marshall has been named offensive player of the week this season. Auburn has won eight SEC weekly awards during its 9-1 season heading to Saturday's game against Georgia.
Marshall has thrown only 15 passes the last two games, but two of them went for touchdowns, and he's been effective running the offense.
"Nick Marshall is dynamic," said Tennessee coach Butch Jones after Saturday's game.
Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said Marshall has "a great feel for the things we’re doing."
"He played hard, he played determined. He ran hard. He protected the football the football when he was running. That’s been a big point of emphasis, something he’s taken a lot of pride in. He started the game well. He was 3-of-4 with a touchdown. The one that was incomplete was a drop. He came out playing well and really played well throughout the whole game."
Auburn didn't waste time in Knoxville. Three scoring drives took 30, 32 and 37 seconds.
Davis' punt return for a touchdown was Auburn's first since2008. Corey Grant's 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown boosted Auburn's return yards total as well. It was the first time in Auburn history the Tigers have returned a punt and kickoff for touchdowns in the same game.
Auburn’s 312 combined return yards were a school record.
Auburn's weekly winners include two quarterbacks (Marshall and Jeremy Johnson have each won two awards) and the last two offensive players of the week (Marshall and taiback Tre Mason).
Auburn's other weekly SEC honors went to Marshall, as the top offensive player after the Texas A&M game; Jeremy Johnson, as freshman of the week after the Western Carolina and Florida Atlantic games; Carl Lawson, freshman of the week after the Ole Miss game; Mason, offensive player of the week after the Arkansas game; and Robenson Therezie, defensive player of the week afer the Washington State game.
Other SEC players of the week named Monday were Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley, defensive player of the week; Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk, freshman of the week; Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil, offensive lineman of the week; and Vanderbilt defensive end Caleb Azubike, defensive lineman of the week.
