Auburn notebook: Tigers turn attention to Georgia

Auburn's Nick Marshall is on the go against Texas A&M

By Charles Goldberg

AUBURN, Ala. -- Nick Marshall took a look at what had transpired, then looked ahead.

"Everyone is disappointed and they should be disappointed because we should have won this game. We just have to focus on Georgia now," Auburn's quarterback said after Saturday's 41-38 loss to Texas A&M.

It was a disappointing loss, to be sure, especially in the way it ended with two late fumbles. Auburn will be looking to bounce back at Georgia in a game now ticketed for a 6:15 p.m. Saturday start in Athens. Georgia showed it still has some offensive moxie in smashing Kentucky 63-21 in Lexington.

Marshall, who combined with Cameron Artis-Payne for 507 yards of offense against A&M, says a bounce-back is in order for Auburn. Marshall's now has 1,766 rushing yards in his career, and is within striking range of Phil Gargis' school record of 1,884. Those 1,766 yards in the eighth-best total for a quarterback in SEC history.

But that was less important Saturday. "We didn't play our best.  We're a better football team than we played tonight," Marshall said.

Here are some notes provided by Auburn…

• Auburn’s 582 yards of total offense (363 yards rushing, 219 yards passing) are the 25th-most in a game in school history and the most in a loss

• The 79 combined points are tied for the 25th-most in school history

• After allowing five touchdowns in the first half, Auburn  held Texas A&M to six points in the second half (two field goals)

• The loss snapped Auburn’s 14-game home winning streak, which was the longest in the nation entering the game.

• Auburn has scored an offensive touchdown in 49 of the last 54 quarters versus SEC opponents

• Texas A&M blocked an Auburn field goal attempt to end the second quarter, returning it 65 yards for a touchdown. The last team to block an Auburn field goal attempt was Georgia in 2013. The last Auburn kick to be blocked and returned for a touchdown was a punt against Mississippi State in 2009, a 10-yard return.
• Marshall recorded three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) to give him 23 career rushing touchdowns and 28 career passing touchdown. He has now accounted for 51 touchdowns in his career, passing Cam Newton (2010) and tying Stan White (1990-93) for fourth in school history.

• With 286 yards of total offense (219 yards passing, 67 yards rushing) on the day, Marshall is now sixth in Auburn career total offense with 5,318 yards, passing Patrick Nix (5,081 yards from 1992-95). Dameyune Craig is fifth with 6,455 yards.
• Coming into the game leading the SEC in rushing (and 18th nationally), Cameron Artis-Payne finished with a career-high 221 yards on a career-high 30 carries. It was his third straight 100-yard rushing game, his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season and the ninth of his career. It was his first 200-yard rushing game in his Auburn career.
• With 221 yards against Texas A&M, Artis-Payne reached 1,190 yards for the season and extended Auburn’s school record of consecutive seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher to six. It also extended Gus Malzahn’s record of having at least one 1,000-yard rusher in all nine seasons as a college coach. He is the 12th-player to rush for 1,000 yards under Malzahn since 2006.

• Jermaine Whitehead recorded his third interception of the season and sixth of his career in the second quarter.

• Cassanova McKinzy’s game-high 12 tackles tied a career high, also done at Vanderbilt in 2012.
