AUBURN, Ala. -- Cameron Artis-Payne ran for 221 yards, scored two touchdowns and went through the 1,000-yard barrier for the season before the Aggies of Texas A&M knew what hit them.

But the Auburn running back and Southeastern Conference rushing leader found little joy in his accomplishments because the Tigers fumbled two times late in the game and lost 41-38.

"It's about winning. If we didn't come out with the win, it doesn't matter," Artis-Payne said.

Artis-Payne had his 1,000 yards for the season early in the game, and already had 101 yards for the day by halftime. Now, through nine games, he's rushed for 1,190 yards, and stays ahead of the single-season rushing record pace set by Tre Mason last season.

"He's a champ," said Auburn coach Gus Malzahn. "He's a tough guy. He did some good things tonight."

Artis-Payne was involved in an early fumble, his first in 159 consecutive carries, and then a late fumble at the 3 on a bad handoff exchange with quarterback Nick Marshall. Marshall was charged with the fumble. Artis-Payne said he recovered it, anyway.

"I got it. There's no question about that," he said.

But the officials said Texas A&M recovered with 2:37 remaining. The Aggies recovered another fumble at their own 29 with 54 seconds left on a bad snap.

"We were trying to check a play, which we've done a lot of times. We had just a little bit of miscommunication there," Malzahn said.

Artis-Payne became the 18th different Auburn player to rush for 1,000 yards. Auburn has had a 1,000-yard rusher 26 times. Auburn has had at least one 1,000-yard rusher each of the last six seasons.

"We felt like we were the better team and if we had come out and executed we would have come out with the win," Artis-Payne said. "Our execution was poor at the beginning of the game. That was partially my fault with the fumble. We just had to play better to win the game and we didn't get that done.

"It's hard, especially we had capitalized we could have definitely come out with a win late in the game."

Artis-Payne said the late fumble was "a poor exchange by me and Nick's part. It's something that really never happens. This whole game was uncharacteristic for us in a lot of different areas."

And now? "We'll bounce back and win the rest of the games. That's the focal point we have now. We're going to learn from this loss."
