Auburn's Nick Marshall is winning national attention

AUBURN, Ala.  Auburn's Nick Marshall received another big endorsement from his head coach Tuesday -- and a committee that recognizes the talents of college football's top quarterbacks.

Marshall was named a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, which goes to the nation's top quarterback. Marshall was also named a semifinalist Monday for the Maxell Award, which goes to the nation's best player.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn talked up Marshall at his weekly press conference, calling him "one of the best offensive players in college football. He’s been leading our offense for two years. We’ve been pretty solid on offense and a lot of that has to do with him." And, Malzahn said, he "definitely needs to be in the mix" for the Heisman Trophy.

And, "our quarterback is probably the best in the country extending plays, and when things break down, he still can get the job done."

Marshall is Auburn's second leading rusher with 631 yards and nine touchdowns, and he's the top passer, having hit 99-of-155 passes for 1,357 yards and 13 touchdowns. He even has a catch for 17 yards.

He had a season-high 254 yards passing in last Saturday's 35-31 win at Ole Miss.

The other Davey O'Brien semifinalists are J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), Trevone Boykin (TCU), Shane Carden (East Carolina), Rakeem Cato (Marshall), Connor Cook (Michigan State), Everett Golson (Notre Dame), Brett Hundley (UCLA), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), Bryce Petty (Baylor), Dak Prescott (Mississippi State), Blake Sims (Alabama), Clint Trickett (West Virginia), Bo Wallace (Ole Miss), Jake Waters (Kansas State) and Jameis Winston (Florida State).

The Davey O'Brien award said more than 75 selection committee members and more than 57,000 fan votes determined the 16 semifinalists.
